At risk of diabetes yet I did not take the hints
By edwinseow | May 14, 2008
There are a certain group of people who are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM) than others. I am at a higher risk than normal people but yet i did not pay attention to the hints. A study has shown that if one of your parents is a Type 2 diabetic, you will have 40% chance of developing Type 2 diabetes. If both parents are Type 2 diabetic, the chance is at 60%. My father was a diabetic but because i was ignorant, i didn’t really take note that i am actually at higher risk.
Below are some factors which makes a person more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes
- family history (parents, siblings, grandparents) of diabetes
- being overweight or obese (BMI above 25)
- advancing age though there is a phenomenal rise in young people diagnosed with prediabetes and diabetes
- race or ethnic background
- lack of exercise
- hypertension and high cholesterol levels
- history of gestational diabetes
- heavy alcohol consumption
- smoking
- unhealthy choice of food
