Definition of Diabetes Mellitus

The full name for Diabetes is actually Diabetes Mellitus.
“Diabetes” is a Greek word and it means ‘excessive urination’. “Mellitus” is a Latin word meaning ‘like honey’. Therefore, if you have diabetes, it means that your urine is sweet as your body is getting rid of the sugar it cannot use through urine.
So now you know why diabetes in chinese is known as “Sweet Urine Disease” (Tang Niao Bing)
