Diabetes? Don’t Pull My Leg, Doctor!
By pohheng | April 21, 2008
I can still recall the morning when i went to the medical center to get my annual health report. The doctor whom i will call Dr. A (i saw a few doctors so have to differentiate) was smiling and going through the medical examination results with me. Must be good..i thought.
“Your health is very good generally except that your fasting plasma blood glucose FPG is high” said the doctor.
“What do you mean HIGH?” i quizzed.
“Fasting Plasma Glucose Blood levels at 126mg/dL is considered Diabetes!” my doctor explained.
“You must be joking, how can i have Diabetes? Must be the food i ate before i fasted last night…i remembered taking some sweet stuff” as tried to reassure myself. I am not overweight, let alone obese, in my early 30’s….though i have lost some weight, felt extreme thirst, frequent urination and feel lethargic recently (read more about symptoms in later post) yes, it must be a mistake! The conversation went on…as i discovered the truth.
Before i left, he gave me a one page diabetes guide and told me to read, exercise more and re-take my fasting blood glucose test & HbA1c 3 months later….this pretty much sums up how i got acquainted with this chronic disease.
