First Diabetes Be-a-Ware Campaign in Singapore

    By edwinseow | June 3, 2008

Good News, Singapore’s Health Promotion Board will be launching the first “Diabetes Be-a-Ware” Campaign from 8 June 08 to 13 July 08.

The campaign is targeting Singaporeans over 40s and there will be an affordable $8 blood test to spot health problems, like diabetes and hypertension, early to prevent complications in future.

Diabetes, which can also lead to heart disease, kidney failure and blindness, affects 8.2 per cent of adults here, while another 12 per cent are on the verge of becoming diabetic.

The numbers are expected to grow as the population greys. Young people are also facing a higher risk as they are eating unhealthy food, facing more stress and lack of exercise.

Therefore, if you are staying in Singapore, do bring your parents down for early screening.  In addition, do a blood test yourself to check if you have prediabetes…you can reverse it if detected early. Don’t wait till you lose a limb!

P.S. 8.2% of Singaporeans have diabetes and a further 12% have prediabetes and more than half are in total ignorance of it. I am one of the lucky ones to detect it early enough and on my way to reversing it and leading a healthy lifestyle.
