How to Keep Your Blood Sugar Levels Normal
By edwinseow | March 24, 2009
Testing and monitoring your blood sugar levels regularly lets you understand how your body reacts to various foods and activities. Knowing these information is crucial if you are going to work at keeping your blood sugar levels normal. Keeping within normal blood sugar range is not an easy task and is not something that is going to happen overnight. You are going to have to work at it by monitoring, tracking and changing the things that are not working for you.
Being a diabetic, it will be a little more difficult to keep your blood sugar levels normal, as your body does not process glucose as it should. Knowing there is a slight battle ahead of you will help to prepare you. After all, preparing for the worst might actually make the journey a bit easier.
There are many advantages to maintaining normal blood glucose levels. One of these benefits is that it lessens the chance of severe diabetic side effects. When a person’s blood sugar spikes or plummets, it has a severe effect on your body. It can cause headaches, dizziness, blackouts, and many other nasty side effects. Unfortunately, these side effects multiply when you have diabetes. If blood sugar levels are kept normal, over longer periods, you have eliminated - or severely lessened - the chance that you will experience these issues. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for you to reverse diabetes as early as you can.
So, how do you maintain normal blood sugar levels? The first step is to get a hold of one of the new freestyle blood glucose monitoring systems. Some insurance companies cover these, some will pay a portion and others will not so you may have to do some bargain hunting. These devices are very easy to use and to travel with, making it much simpler for you to check your glucose levels wherever you are.
Start by monitoring and tracking your blood sugar levels throughout the day. Set up a routine, or set times, when you will check your glucose levels. Track the times and result of these tests.
Once you have gotten in a habit of this, start tracking your food and liquid intake - everything you eat or drink should be tracked. Now combine these two steps. Take your glucose levels before you eat and after you eat. This tells you what particular foods are doing to your blood sugar levels. You should refer to the list of glycemic foods index for more information.
Once you have done this for a couple of weeks, you should have a good idea as to what activities and foods are causing your blood sugar levels to raise, lower or stay normal. In order to keep your blood sugar levels normal, focus on the foods and activities that had little to no effect on your glucose levels.
After you have come up with a good eating and activity plan, go over it with your doctor. Surely, he will be impressed with the work that you put into keeping your blood sugar levels normal. This type of plan will help you maintain normal blood sugar levels, throughout your life, but it may help your doctor with some ideas for other patience as well. You never know the time you spent creating this plan may come of great use to many.
