Is Bitter Melon Good for Prediabetes
By pohheng | July 9, 2008
You bet! Bitter Melon or commonly known as Bitter Gourd has been in the news recently for helping diabetes to control blood glucose levels for diabetes.
I did a search and find some good information from ”Diabetes Cure Guide“, some extract as below
“People wonder how this vegetable fights diabetes. Scientific research claimed that the bitter gourd controls sugar in a two-fold manner by acting as a mediator between the body’s cell and the insulin.
This herb is designed to block the glucose formation in the bloodstream and breaks down the barrier that prevents cells from using their own natural insulin.
Seen as a perfect cure for such a disease, studies confirm that bitter gourd has contents that increase the production of beta cells by the pancreas. With it, the body’s adeptness to produce and release insulin is then improved. Not just that, it could also speed up the number and activity of insulin receptors.
As it regulates blood sugar levels, it also keeps body functions to operate normally. Its content, Gurmarin, achieves a positive sugar regulating effect by suppressing the neural response to sweet stimuli.”
After i was diagnosed with Prediabetes, I have been advised to take more bitter melon or bitter gourd by people who have relatives with Diabetes.
When i dine outside, i always try to order dishes with bitter melon (gourd) if its available in the menu. If you are in Singapore, some good dishes will be Fish Slice Soup with Bitter Gourd or if you choose to go for economical rice, select the side dish bitter melon (gourd) with egg. These dishes are both tasty and good for diabetes and prediabetes’ blood glucose control.
I have been consistently eating this ugly looking vegetable and so far my glucose levels are okay and i am on my way to reverse Prediabetes. You may want to try and see if it works for you.
If you have experience with bitter melon (gourd) on your blood glucose, you are welcomed to share it here. Thanks in advance.
