Metformin + Me => Giddy Spells

    By pohheng | April 24, 2008

News spread in the office soon and many colleagues were recommending me to seek a second opinion.  I agreed but not till about 3 weeks later.  The doctor was from someplace near my company and will called him Doctor B.

Doctor B recommended that i just test my HbA1c levels.  When i first got back my HbA1c results which was about 1 month after being diagnosed with diabetes with a fasting plasma glucose FPG of 126mg/dl, the reading was 6.3% which was considered prediabetes and not diabetes as i feared.

Doctor B was really excited and said my situation can be reversed and said to help me faster, i should take some medication and went on to prescribe some pills for me and to go back to him for retest 2 months later.

The pill given to me was Metformin ~ 500mg which i was supposed to take 1 tablet right after lunch everyday. I was very eager also and religiously followed his instructions.  At the meantime, i also stayed away from sugarery foods…basically, anytime that contained sugar are out.  From the second day onwards, i began to feel giddy after taking Metformin but i pressed on.  What’s more important than getting back my health.

It was 2 weeks later that i began to experience severe giddiness and it was so bad that i could not even go to work.  I went to see my family doctor (Doctor C) and was given 2 days medical leave.

Doctor C told me the for my case, i should probably just start with more exercise and diet control and told me to stop Metformin as the medicine may be too strong for me.  So i followed his advice.
