Metformin + Me (II) - More Giddy Spells…Hypoglycemia?
By pohheng | April 25, 2008
It was end Jan 08 and 2 months had passed since i had my last check, I had to go back to Doctor B for followup test for HbA1C & fasting plasma glucose FPG tests. I was very confident that i will be getting good results because i have been exercising hard and have been keeping off sugary food.
My results was mixed, my FPG was 86mg/dl, down from 126mg/dl but my HbA1C was 6.4%, an increase of 0.1%. How can that be? I told Doctor B that i had stopped Metformin on the advice of Doctor C. He disagreed and wanted me to continue Metformin but at the same time also felt that Metformin at 500mg may be too strong for me so he asked me to reduce to half a tablet.
So i went back and started back on Metformin but half a tablet. When i saw that my FPG was lowered but HbA1c actually trended higher, i went to overdrive mode, exercise even more and eat lesser.
It was not long after that my giddy spells came back, worse still, the hunger and fatigueness came back. There was one day when i was shaking when working and decided to see Doctor C again. He did a blood glucose test on the spot and I found out that i was actually suffering from low blood glucose / sugar or commonly known as Hypoglycaemia (Hypoglycemia). For symptoms of Hypoglycaemia look here.
Doctor C ordered me to stop Metformin immediately and told me that for a person like me who is not obese, a change in diet and lifestyle like exercise should be enough. In addition, he gave me a free blood glucose tester and i was supposed to test 2 times a day, 3 days a week and see him in 2 months time. So that’s how i got my tester.
