Why Do You Always Feel Tired and Fatigue If You Are a Diabetic or Prediabetic
By pohheng | June 12, 2008

photo from Catherine Leconte
Firstly, you must understand that your body gets its energy (fuel) from the food we eat in the form of glucose. For the cells to be able to use these glucose, they need a hormone called insulin. Insulin is made in the pancreas.
For a person diagnosed with prediabetes or Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), the pancreas have began to produce less insulin than in a normal person. Whereas in the case of Type 2 Diabetes or Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), the pancreas have stopped or produce very little insulin.
Since the cells in your body cannot get enough glucose, your body is deprived of its energy or fuel. This is why you always feel tired and fatigue. (Find out more on symptoms of diabetes and prediabetes here)
In the coming posts, find on why unexplained sudden weight loss always occur just before you get diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes.

I am a Big Water Container, Here’s Why
By pohheng | June 11, 2008

photo from allenp
Friends who know me long enough will know that i am a person who is always thristy and i can gulped down gallons of water and then go for frequent toilet breaks. One of my good brother Jonathan Poh actually gave me a nickname “Water Container” or “Shui Tong” in chinese.
I usually brushed it away as i was like that since secondary school. Little did i knew that this is actually a very early symptom of diabetes or in my case prediabetes or Impaired Glucose Tolerance. That’s why when i had more extreme or severe case of thirst and urination last year, i ignored it. (find out why you are always thirsty and urine frequently here). Luckily my annual health check done late last year were able to detect this problem.
If you also experience extreme thirst and frequent urination for no reason and also experience one of more of the symptoms listed, it is advisable for you to visit you doctor for a blood test - be it fasting plasma glucose, oral glucose tolerance test or HbA1c blood test

Email on Artificial Sweetener Aspartame
By pohheng | June 10, 2008
Received an email today on the sugar substitute - artificial sweetener Aspartame. Quoted exactly below:
“Subject: Silent Killers-sweets to avoid
ASPARTAME - THE SILENT KILLER (by Ron Harder)
To those who prefer to consume artificial flavoring:There is an epidemic across North America today of Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus. Most people do not understand why this epidemic is happening and they do not know why these diseases are so rampant. I would like to share with you the main reason we are having this very serious problem. Many people today use artificial sweeteners in their tea or coffee.
They do this because the ads they see on TV tell them that sugar is bad for their health. This is absolutely true. Sugar is toxic to us but what most people use as a replacement for sugar is much more deadly. I am talking about ASPARTAME. It is the cause of the epidemic that was mentioned above. ASPARTAME is an extremely toxic chemical that is produced by a chemical company called Monsanto.
ASPARTAME is being marketed around the world as a sugar substitute and is found in all diet soft drinks, such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. It is also found in artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful; and it is used in many other products as a sugar replacement.
ASPARTAME is marketed as a diet product but it is not a diet product at all. In fact, it will cause you to GAIN weight because it makes you crave carbohydrates. Causing you to gain weight is only a very small part of what ASPARTAME does. It is a toxic chemical that changes the brain’s chemistry. It can and does cause severe seizures.
This chemical changes the dopamine level in the brain and it is particularly deadly for anyone suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
ASPARTAME is extremely poisonous and here is why one of the toxic ingredients of it is wood alcohol. When the temperature of ASPARTAME exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in it is converted to Formaldehyde, and then to formic acid, which in turn causes folic acidosis.
FORMALDEHYDE is grouped in the same class of poisons as Cyanide and Arsenic which are very deadly toxins. The only difference is, Formaldehyde kills quietly and it takes a little longer. And, in the process of killing people, it causes all kinds of neurological problems. There are 92 documented symptoms of Aspartame Poisoning leading to coma and death.
The majority of these symptoms are neurological because the ASPARTAME attacks and destroys the nervous system. One of these symptoms is Lupus, which has become almost as rampant as Multiple Sclerosis especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.”
Wonder if the claims are really true. If they are, then it is bad news to all diabetics and prediabetics as i am sure many are actually using this substitute. I myself sometimes drink Coke Light if i have my meals in fastfood restaurants.

Why Do You Always Feel Thirsty and Frequent Urination If You Are a PreDiabetic or Diabetic
By pohheng | June 9, 2008

photo from Zsuzsanna Kilian
Have you ever wonder why you drink lots of water but you still feel extremely thirsty? Find out why in this post.
In the case of a Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus - NIDDM) or Prediabetes (Impaired Glucose Tolerance - IGT), the pancreas produces little insulin or the body is unable to use the insulin that is present and therefore the cells cannot use these glucose in the body. Excessive glucose then starts to build up in the bloodstream and the kidney cannot filter all these extra glucose. Read the rest of this entry »

Today is Dumpling Festival But I Am Not Excited At All - Cos I Can’t Eat
By pohheng | June 8, 2008

photo from garytamin
Today is Dumping Festival or Dragon Boat Festival. It is an important date in the Chinese Calendar to honour Qu Yuan, a patriotic Chinese Poet. Find out more about this Dumpling or Dragon Boat Festival here.
On this day, people will race dragon boats and eat chinese dumplings, glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. This is one of my favourite food but this year is different because glutinous rice is a no-no for prediabetics. It is a high Glycemic Index or GI food which will cause the blood glucose / sugar level to rise rapidly. As I am controlling my diet through low GI food, i am giving dumplings a miss this year. So sad…but at the rate I am going, i will probably be totally reversed from prediabetes next year so i guess i just have to bear with it.
Those who can eat it, enjoy yourselves ok. I’ll join you next year, ya.
I will be writing more about GI food very soon so stay tuned.

Disappointed…Diabetes Be aWare Campaign Not Ready
By pohheng | June 7, 2008
Hoping to bring everyone the first hand coverage of the First Diabetes Be aWare Campaign in Suntec City, Singapore, i went down early at 11am this morning, the very first day of the Campaign.
What a disappointment, there weren’t any signs directing people to the exhibition place. Instead, i saw poster on some cancer awareness, the world book fair and Barney’s 20th anniversary activites etc…for a moment i thought i remembered the venue wrongly.
Finally, i found the exhibition to be near Mango store but another disappointment, the place is fenced up and the staff are still putting up posters and exhibits. Having no choice but to walk and browse outside when i saw a poster saying the event will only start at 1730hrs. Nothing of this was mentioned in the papers, if not i wouldn’t have wasted a trip there.
Here are some photos of the exhibition taken outside by my son Ashton….with some help of course.
If you have to visit the exhibition, please feel free to post some comments on the event, thanks in advance.

Waiting for My Latest HbA1c Blood Test Results - Nervous
By pohheng | June 5, 2008
I went for my latest HbA1c blood test last Friday. The results ought to be out soon. Normally if you are paying for the test, you can get the results on the spot but i was using my company’s card (for the last time) and will have to wait as the tests will be conducted in an assigned lab.
So nervous….how will i fare this time? Should be good because after reading up so much on diabetes and prediabetes, i found out so much and i discovered what kind of diet i should follow, what lifestyle to live, exercises and right mentality to use. It should only be a confirmation that i am in the right direction….Keeping fingers crossed, wish me luck.
