Sudden Weight Loss Can Happen for Both Diabetes and Prediabetes

    By pohheng | May 22, 2008

One of the most common symptoms of diabetes and prediabetes alike is sudden weight loss.  I began to notice i was losing weight when a belt i bought from Giordano in Aug 07 became too large within a month and i had to go back for them to punch 2 additional holes.

I convinced myself that it must be due to the lack of sleep and more exercise.  You see, we just had our second baby, Ashlyn, in late Jul 07. I was the one who took care of the newborn as Elaine needed lots of rest.  It means that i have to wake up frequently during the nights.  Moreover, i made a conscious effort to try to jog at least once a week.

My wife also observed that i was losing weight and urged me to see a doctor.  I agreed to it as i was due for my company’s annual health check.  At the time of the check in late Oct 07, my weight was already down from 68 to 64kg.  The annual health check showed that i had diabetes (fasting plasma glucose FPG 126mg/dl, read this post).  The results of my HbA1c done in Dec 07 was 6.3% and that indicates prediabetes, read about it in this post.

From the time i started losing weight to Feb 08 this year, i was at 56kg, losing about 12kg or about half kg every week (12kg in 6 months) and the reason is due to prediabetes.  Find out why weight loss always occurs in diabetes in later posts.
