When IGNORANCE is not a Bliss

    By edwinseow | May 12, 2008

According to a Singapore Health Survey conducted in 2004, Diabetes affects about 1 out of 12 people in the population and out the figure on Prediabetes as close to 1 out of 8.  And the bad news are, more than half of the diabetics and prediabetics in Singapore do not know they have diabetes which is commonly known as the “silent killer”.

A even bigger problem is since this disease is so widespread, one would expect majoriFruitsty of the people to have a good knowledge and understanding of it but this is not the case (again, i am one of them).  I found out that many people are clueless and completely IGNORANT of diabetes even when someone in their family also has diabetes (their parents, grandparents, relatives, friends).  The advice i get from most of them are like exercise more, cut down on sugar, eat lots of vegetables and fruits…etc

It was when i experienced wild swings in blood sugar levels during daily testing/monitoring that i began to dig and research on diabetes and prediabetes.  What i found out was the most advices given to me are only half true.  For example, eating more fruits….during one of the visits to my friend’s house for gathering (by the way, his mother was a diabetic), i didn’t know what to eat.  My friend, being a good host, dished out some watermelon and mangoes and being ignorant, i ate quite a bit.  When i went home a do blood test, i got a shock, my blood sugar level was through the roof.  WHAT HAPPENED i ask…and i did a search in the internet and found out that watermelon is actually a High Glycemic Index (GI) food (more of this in later posts).

So you see, not all fruits are EQUAL….the same goes to exercise (again in later posts).  Therefore, i encourage everyone who is a diabetic or know some diabetics to really do some research or get them to visit and join this site as i will do all the research and post them here as i fight against prediabetes.  Remember IGNORANCE in diabetes can result in many complications like amputation, kidney failure….
